WANGANUI v. SOUTH WELLINGTON.

The twelve-aside match between the Wiinganui and South Wellington oluba was contested on Saturday evening, Mr. Talbot, Superintendent of Telegraphs, being able to place a wire at the disposal of the teams. The local side is also indebted to the 'Rev. Mr. Shirer for the use of .St. James's schoolroom for the occasion. An early start was effected and good progress was made. The moves wore sent through with the utmost disp.ittfh by the operators, Messrs.' G. Clark '(Wellington) and'R. M'Carthy (Wanpuui)., Miss Anderson and - Mr. W. Welton acted jus scrutineers, and Mr. ] F. K. Kelling umpired at this end. Wanganui won the toss and thus had first move at-tho odd-numbered boards. The run of tho play was as follows: Board 1: Harlo (W.) v. Purchas (W. 5.),. Petroif defence. This came dorm to a Book and, paw. ending, a draw being "agreed to at move 30. Board 2: 0. C. Pleasants (W.) v. 6. P. Anderson (W.S.). King's Gambit accepted. The latter,. of tor gaining force majoure, endeavoured to force matters at a late hour by sacrificing knight for pawn/ ■- He was, however, only able to draw, the same result as when these two playera met in the ''Easter Rally" at Masterfcon. Board 3: H. Jessup (W.) v. Welton (W.S.)'. Sooteh opening. Here, too, a draw wab agreed to, the play having yielded neither side an advantage at any stage. Board -4: Battle (W.) ( v. W. J. (Ginoco Piano). ■ The former wrongly read au incoming move and would have lost his Queou but for liev. Braddock's genorosity in agreeing to ivaive the usual penalty. This gamo is one of three unfinished. Board 9: Salt (W.) v. Greig (W.S.). Giuooo Piano. Unfinished. Mr. Salt, although handicapped by blind, noss, is playing splendidly. Board 10: l?edward (W.) v. Eno (W.S.). Ginoco Piano. Tho latter won two Knights and queened a pawn, winning easily. Boacd 11: Williamson (W.) v. W. A. Fisher (W.S.). Ginoco Piano. Fisher failed to use his King as a fighting force in tho end game, and his Rook was consequently unable to stem the advance of three connected passed pawns. The Wanganui rep. scored a good win at movo 13. Board 12: Clark (W.) v. W. J. Robbins (W.S.). Queen's Gambit declined. Tho former gained two pawns in the initial exchanges and afterwards steadily increased his advantage, filially obtaining his opponent's resignation at move 39. Each side lias thus scored 1J point.;, and the result of the match consequently depends on the adjudication of tho three outstanding games, the position being as follows:— Wellington South—Purchas, D., }; Anderson, G.
