IMPROVED TRANSPORT
UTILISATION OF MOTORS
DROP IN FOOD PRICES . : ANTICIPATED By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright London, August 20. The proposal lo establish motor, transpo"t bureaux throughout the■ country emanates from the Port Transit Committee appointed in 1915, which, after a long session, has reported in favour of utilising' motor transport. The committeo urges the Government to .penalise merchants unless they withdraw goods from the docks at the earliest opportunity. ' ' It has been decided to send a special committee to ask Mr. Lloyd George for his support. If this is -forthcoming, the committee is sanguine that it will result, in an immediate drop in food prices, estimated at from 50 to 70 per cent, in some districts. i The committee also urges that. ..the Canal Control Committee should be em-, powered to commandeer craft for the in-' land waterways,' which should be :used in conjunction with short-distance railways to supplement road transport. Purchasers of motor wagons should--ho compelled to use them for the conveyance of goods, and the whole, ; -together with the railways, should be brought into a single network of organisation, bringing the ports nearer the 'roads; the roads nearer the railways, and motor transport facilities nearer to both.—'Aus.N.Z.
