AN ACT OF JUSTICE
The Government ought) to have no hesitation in taking up the Bill submitted to the Hoxiscs of Representatives by Me. T. 11. Wilfoud "to remove the embargo upon-, the construction of a tramway along the Hutt Road. The restriction manifestly is one that should never have been imposed. It is for the 'people of the district conccrr.ed and not for the Railways Department to say what subsidiary transport facilities are necessary within its boundaries, and ordinary justice demands the unconditional removal of the restriction without loss of time. The matter is the more urgent since any hindrance to tramway extension from Wellington accentuates disabilities which in any case would be severely felt. There is little doubt that sooner or later thej construction of a tramway aloijg the Hutt Road vill take ail important part in the solution of the housing problem, so far as Wellington is concerned, 'by enabling city workers to live in the outlying areas with, more convenient means of getting to and fro than the Railways; Department lias yet provided or seems likely to. The issue raised is perfectly simple and, supported as it is by local members other than its sponsor, the Bill ought to l.v assured of passage.
