FOE, THE SALVATION ARMY. ! The Salvation Army has accepted the tpndcr of Messrs. Trevor Bros., Ltd., for the alterations and additions to their Citadel in Vivian Street and tho erection of a new young people's -hall &nd classrooms facing. Gray.'Young; '• '•> , The whole of the existing, building lacing Vivian Street is to bo dismantled, leaving only tho brick walls, roof principals. and windows. ■ The centre portion of the back wall is to be taken down to allow for tho new semi-circular band gallery. il'he present building is 9ft. back from tho street line, and a'now vestibule is to be built over tho entrance floors out to tho frontage line, thus protc-cting tho auditorium from draught. There will be a. new entrance hall 12ft. wide at each end. of which will be the stairs up to the gallery, and in the middle, doors leading to tlio auditorium. The walls aro Jo be finished in white plaster, with an. ornamental plaster ceiling. Entrance will be made into tho auditorium by two pairs of glass doors, and the effect on entering should prove to be striking, as -the walls are to have dark-stained wood dadoes, with cream-tinted plaster-over, .and the ceilings modelled fibrous plaster .ceilings. The .band gallery will bo finished in wood panelling 7ft. high, and the platform, which stands in front of this' Gallery.• is also to be finished in panelling and moulded rails, etc. Two semi-circular projections provide 6pace for an .organ on ono fiide of the readingdesk and a piano on' the other. Tho ceiling of tho band gallery has been de- ■ eierned with a half-saucer .dome, W as to sjive the best acoustic qualities possible to this portion of the building. .The'gallery ■ at the back and sides of the auditorium is to be constructed in reinforced concrete, and will .accommodate 275 persons. The gallery-front will be finished'with specially moulded fibrous plaster. The lighting will be on the indirect system, and will give ail even diffused lipnt. The contract provides for new seating, which will bo constructed, and finished in the same material as the rest of tho woodwork. An officers' room and a local ofoeer's room are to be placed at the side "of the gallery, and immediate y above will bo the sisters' room and a luncheon room. From the existing back wall out to Jessie Street there is to be a corn■pletelv new addition in brick, including the band gallery, etc. Two .entrances are to bo provided /from Jessie Streetono for tho girls and the other for-the bovs. On tlio ground floor will be a large primary classroom and an inter- t mediate classroom, with a lavatory adjacent Thero ai'e also to be ft kitchen with the necessary fittings, and a large band-room with cupboards, etc., for the instruments.- Wide reinforced concrete staircases lead up to the first floor, which is completely occupied by the Sunday School Hall, at each side of which are small classrooms. A small library and officers' rooni is shown on e'aoh side of the platform. On the second floor aro the sirls' and boys' Bible classrooms, together with lavatories for' each sex. Tho interior will be finished with wood dadoes, plastered walls, and. fibrous plaster sheets on, the codings. The exterior to Jcjssic Street will l;e finished in red brick with cement stucco cornices, doorways, and bands, and the whole ,of tho Vivian Street frqnt finished in stucco moulded and panelled in tho Neo-Greck style.. Street windows are to .be cut into this front, the centre one being particularly large, aiid tho wliolo effect will be auito modern.
