ERUPTIONS AND "NERVES"
REPORTS REGARDING WHITE' • ISLAND. By Telegraph—Press Association, Opotiki, August 29. The publication of certain reports concerning an eruption at White Island ara the cause of much amusement and ridicule in this district. White Island is always active'and subject lo periodical outbursts, when the volume of smoke and steam generally increases.- As far as is known here, the island has been Quito normal for a considerable time, subject to the variations mentioned. The report that a cloud of smoke seen from Auckland wa.s the result of an eruption on White Island cannot be taken seriously, and the report that tremors were heard and felt on the mainland aro absolutely without foundation. A series of mild thunderstorms occurred about the time mentioned, and tho flashes of lijjht referred to were probably due to lightning, the rumbling to thunder, and the tremors to "nerves." .
