THE COLOUR BAR IN SOUTH AFRICA
—. —s_ —_ A GRAVE WARNING By Telegraph-Press Association-Copyright Cape Town, August 27. Before the Low Grade Mines Commission, at Johannesburg, the Director of Native Labour uttered a grave warning as to the native grievances, especially" the colour bar. Serious trouble, he , said, was inevitable in the near future unless they wero remedied. There were ..two. alternatives-wither to sit on the volcano till the day of eruption, or to treat the situation in a statesmanlike way by eliminating the colour bar and allowing tho whites and Wacks to compete on their merits. A statement presented by the Mine Owners' Union, in reply to the Commissioner, protested strongly against nny relaxation of the present regulations, and urged the retention of tho colour, bar as a protection for European workers against indentured native labour. It declared that the alleged crisis in tho. mining industry urgently necessitated the Government seriously considering, by means, of nationalisation or otherwise, the bringing of the gold mines under more efficient public control.—Aus.-N.Z.
