9 VALUABLE COLLECTION OF.MAORI RELICS.. By Telestraph-Press Association. New Plymouth, August 28. The Now Plymouth Museum wus offici- • ally opened to-day by the Mayor, Mr. C. H. Burgess, in the presence of a large and representative gathering of citizens. The principal exhibits consist of what is known as the Skinner collection of Maori relics and curios. These' were collected over a period of many years by Mr. W. 11. Skinner, ex-Commissioner of Lands, nno , his son, Mr. .11. D. Skinner, lecturer in ethnology at Otago University,'both of whom wero locally born, and represent every phase of life of tho Natives and also relate to the early occupation of tho district by Europeans. The collection was offered as a free gift to the municipality by tho Messrs. Skinner,- and their generous nnd public-spirited'action wa3 suitnKy acknowledged in speeches and a resolution expressing anoreciation of the same was carried 'by" tho assemblage amidst enthusiasm. Tho Borough Museum is. a splendid fireproof building, recently erected by the Borough Council, and the whole of the' exhibits are well cased and displayed. The exhibits make the museum one of the most .valuable and interesting in the Dominion.
