GOLF LINKS EXTENSION
AT BEBHAMPOEE. A -deputation from . the Island Bay Ratepayers" Association. waited on the Reserves Committee of tho City Council yesterday afternoon in connection with a rumoured proposal that the .reserve across the rpad from Wakefield Park (the Diippa ' Street recreation grounds) was to.he utilised as an extension of the Berhampore Municipal Golf Links. s(r. E, J. Colley said that various reports had reached tliem to the effect that the proposed, rest park was to bo used for golf, but 'he could not-conceive that the council would go back on a promise. definitely ' made. Further, lie could not see how it would be of much use for links,'as ho could drive a ball from one end t<? the other in two liits. The ground was to have been planted according, to a scheme the association had suggested,. and the sits of an orna, mental! pool was marked out.' Willow trees were planted along the creek, but live lion-fodder for the Zoo (old horses) ihad been turned into the reserve, 1 and eaten the willows, with the result ti„nt I there were now dead stumps instead of live willows. He further considered that golf on the ground suggested would be a danger to the public, as it was so near the public road. He trusted that I the original ipromise of the council would be kept, and the ground be preserved for a. rest park. The chairman of the committee (Councillor G. Frost) said that the position was that there had been a very strong demand made-for an extension of tlw golf-links at. Berhampore. Instead of the ground providing only two or thrco holes as suggested, the council's exnert had advised' that- they could get eight holes, with long shots in between, by pning round the sullies at tho baSk of the rest park. The lay of the proposed new. links was away from the park, up towards Russell Terrace, and thev could be assured that the park would be preserved. • j On being.appealed to, the Director of Reserves. (Mr. M'Kenzie) said thn.t it was proposed to lay down a ,<rreen. on ono portion of the .park'; behind the rotunda site, and the first drive would be from that-snot northwards. " Councillor Frost said' that th" deputation could.rest assured that the park would'not be interfered with, hut'tho demand for an IS-holo course was a heavy one, as the 9-holo course was very congested.
