■ PORT VICTOR AT LYTTELTON. ' 1 •The Pprt Victor v'bich arrived at Lyttel-' ton last Suuday with some. 40C0 tons of coal for the railways, was formerly known as tho Muritai, and sailed .under tfie flag -of the Tyser Line prior to being taken over by l"io Commonwealth and Dominion Line. She was the ilrst slivn to be commandeered during the war as a store ship for the Navy, but, being too big for that purpose, she *a3 later engaged as a transport.for Supplies, From 1914 to the end of 1915 she was engaged as an Army supply ship, running between South American port 3, Britain and France, and from 1915 up to her present trip to Australasia Bhe was carrying frozen meat from Buenos Aires and Monte Video. While bound from South Ameiica to Havro on September 26, 1917, she was attacked off the Isle of Wight by a submarine. The torpedo tore a h.ugo holo in the side of No. 1 hold. The torpedo struck., shortly after ..midnight, and tho' submarine was not sighted. The vessel proceeded under her own power to Southampton, whore, after Suing temporarily repaired, she was dispatched to Messrs. Workman, Clark and Co.'s yard at Belfast, where permanent repairs were effected, and after fout and a half months she was ready for sea again. Captain W. THE NEW WAIRUNA. The Union Company's new 'steamer Wairuna, which is discharging San Francisco cargo at Auckland, is a sister ship to the raider Wolff, which captured and tank tJie old Wairuna. She is a steel twin-screw steamer of 5832 tons gross. Her dimensions are:-Length, 420 ft.; breadth, 66.2 ft.: and depth, 29.6 it. She is «au ex-Gorman steamer, and has had a varied career since she -was < built iii 1914. She was one ol the first German vessels to be captured, being taken off Gibraltar at the beginning of the war. From Gibraltar she was taken to Mudros, and was used as a store ship until the Gallipoli evacuation. Sho was then sent to England. From England sho made several voyages to Canada and back with general cargoes, and between England anil France as a transport. While lying at Dunkirk she was struck by a bomb, which shattered her forecastle head. Her next adventure occurrcd when elie was on the way from Franco to England. She was struck by a torpedo abreast of No. 2 hold. She was off the Isle of Wight at the time,, and the captain ran her ashore and saved lier from foundering in deep water. She was afterwards towed to London and repaired. ' When fit for sea. she was acquired by the Union Company and named after the old Wairuna. She left London under her now owners on April 19. and called at Norfolk, Virginia, Baltimore, and South American ports beforo going to San Francisco to load her present cargo.. From Auckland she is to go to Newcastle, Melbourne, and Syilnoy to comnlete discharge. Captain H. O.
