CITY GARBAGE
How to deal with city gnrbage has Always boon !\ municipal problom' (states the Jlel.boui®) "y\ge"), mid whereas in soma cases refuse destructors have proved satisfactory, they are expensive to run, «nd can only be used whore there is enough garbage to keep a large plant going. When there is no destructor, there is the tip evil, which nobody wants. It is that from an up-to-date destructor'about 50 per cent, of the cost of rnnning can lie recovered by ulillsing the boat of combustion to generate power,_ and by selling tho clinker, but this still leaves tho other 50 per cent, cost to bo mot. An inventor has recently submitted a system, which lip has patented throughout the world, to the Soienco ami Industry Bureau for destroying refuse in such a way as to make tho process profitable. The bureau, his not yet gone into details, but tho idea lies its points. The process is apparently a species of destructive distillation, in<which all tho oils, tar, and gases and hyro-«irt>ons aro recovered, and the residue put to some commercial uso. The inventor claims that tho beauty of his patent is that small plants are" just as good as largo, so that the very smallest municipality could instal one and make it pay. It is understood that tho inventor is prepared to run a plant provided he can eeouro supplies of garbage.
