The Rev. Thomas Hnlliday, of Larisdowno. Masterton, has accepted the call to the Foxton Presbyterian Church. The call will ho handed to him by the Wairarqpa Presbytery 011 Tuesday next. lit tho Masterton Magistrate's Court yesterday. Mr. S. L. P. Free, S.M., gave judgment for plaintiff for J3105 155., with costs as per ..scalo in the caso in which John Cross, junr., of Raetihi, farmer, proceeded against B. D. Thomas, of Martinborough, farmer, to recover tho sum of ills 15s. damages in cohnection with a recent motor-car collision on the Rinmtaka Hill.

As an outcome of an indignation mooting held recently in connection with the insanitary state of some of ,tlie primary schools in Palmerston North, the chairman of the meeting (Mr. J. A. Nash, M.P.) communicated with Dr. Watt, Distrift Health Officer, and asked him to pay a visit of inspection to the.Campbell Street School.'' Mr. Nash has now received a reply from the Health Officer to tho effect tlmt he will 'visit tho school at the earliest opportunity. On Tuesday next tho Land Board will hold a sitting at Palmerston North for the purpose of examining applicants for soldier-settlements in Kairanga and Oturoa Blocks. . The fornier property was nurchased by the Government from Mr. R.. M'Kenzie, and has'.been cut into twelve sections, and is to be known as Kairanga settlement. The other property was acquired from Mr. W. S. Carter and is situated close to Foxton. This will bo known as Oturoa settlement, and has been cut into seven seotions. At the conclusion of the examination of applicants, ballots will be conducted for both blocks. ■ At. a special mcetins: of the Palmerston North Borough Council Councillor Spooner spoke of tho beauties of the reserve at the head of. the waterworks at Tiritea, and said that something'should be dons to popularise it. He considered that at least .£SOO should'be 6pent in making- the grounds, comfortablo and attractive, and in improving the track. It was the only sconio place to which they could take visitors. The Mayov suggested that instead of doing that they should ask the curator and the engineer to make an inspection and report to tho council. They might be able to spend .£2OO from the waterworks account on tho reserve. It was decided to obtain a report on the matter. At the annual meeting of the Palmerston North Co-operative Building Society (Starr Bowkett), the chairman, Mr. C. H. Rush, described tho past year as tho most successful during the twenty years' existence of -the l , society. Messrs., G. Woodroofe and W. iMundy were elected directors, and Messrs. Barnicoat was the ?uest of the leading business men of Palmerston North this week, and he and members of his .Jamily were made the recipients of presentations on the occasion of' Mr. Barnicoafs retirement from tho position of manager of 'the Union Bank of Australia. At <1 public meeting of ratepayers of Palmerston North, convened by the Mayor,, a motion was adopted instructing the council to at onc.e proceed with its scheme for the electric lighting of the town. The council is instructing its consulting electrical engineer to draw up ( a scheme. „

Christchurch, August 27. ■ There was a spirited discussion at a meeting of the executive of the North Canterbury Fanners' Union on the sub-' j>.t of the desirableness of the Government continuing to commandeer certain of'the products of the Dominion, and fix the price of game. The motion beforo the meeting was forwarded by the Oxford branch and read: "That this branch approves of fixetl prices for a year or two to come, but not lower than previously, and provided the Dominion Government' received the profits." The idea was generally favoured, but before remitting the matter to the conferenco.it was decided that branches should discuss the matter and report to next meeting.
