TO FERRET OUT RED ANARCHY
- NEW YORK CITIZENS SECRET SERA r ICE BUREAU. t The New York Police Department- is 1 organising' a vast 6eoret service bureau - whose ostensible purpose will be to spy - upon Bolshevists, anarchists and othei > persons conspiring .against the Govern- ' ment. The organisation, according to reports 1 which have elicited no denials either i from the Polico Department or Mr. Shaw, is to be modelled upon the Amerii can Protective League, which was active s during the war in ferreting out German , agents. The new police espionage sys- , tern will. embrace men and women in : all walks of life, and it is the purpose ■ to spy out anti-Government plots not i only among out-and-out anarchists, bul • olsu in labour unions, private clubs and ' other places where men and women fore gather. r The city is to be divided into zones , and each of theso will be under the su- , pervieion of a man selected as being especit ally well qualified for this service. Lawi y'ers, physicians and professional meu of all description are to be brought to t gcther in this organisation together with f mechanics, labourers, waiters and the r like. It will be .their duty to patrol their various assignments and report j suspicious circumstances to the zone capI tains, who in turn will send theso reports to those higher in authority. J It is said that no effort will be made to use this organisation for the detection of crime and the operatives will not be \ required to make arrests, lit fact, it will be the object of the police to keep the identity of these agents secret. In " (his way it will be possible for secret agents to be scattered throughout the ! city in the most advantageous positions 1 and they will wear no badges or other ' identification marks of any kind. 1 According to the present pians of the J Police Department it is understood that ' tho secret service organisation calls for 1 200b workers, and that tho various dis-■ • trict associations of the Socialist Party 1 will be the first to which agents will be , 1 assigned, for it is the belief of tho po--1 lies that the seeds of anti-government ; propaganda are to be found vn them:
