_ o_ ■■ "I DON'T CARE A DAMN!" London, August 1. * The Poet Laureate romains unmoved bv the public clamour for a peace ode. The Government shows embarrassment, but has confessed itself powerless. "Tho Times," in a leader, eays-.— "Throughout the war our poets sang lustily, and a 'stream of adequate and respectable vorse flowed to this office. Since peace was declared our bards have been tongue-tied, Dr. Bridges being no exception. In the world of poets, even Gabriel d'Annunsiio has written no hymn of peace. It is a curious phenomenon, perhaps due to reaction, mystification or an overwhelming sense by poets of their insufficiencies." Dr. Bridges, when interviewed to-day in a tranciuil garden at Oxford, said that lie hadn't read and wouldn't read tho Parliamentary report of the discussion concerning him. "I don't care a damn," he added, when questioned.—"Times" and Sydney "Sun."
