INFECTIOUS DISEASES
INCREASE IN INFLUENZA CASES. During the week ending August 25, thero were 32 eases of influenza reported in the Wellington Public Health 'District, us compared with 23 for the previous week. Three of the cases were of the pntAimonic 'type, one being iii the Wuiroa hospital district, one in tho Palmerston North hospital district, and the other in the Hutt Valley. . Of tho remainder one was reported as a severe, case, the rest lwing classed as mild. The hospital districts from which the 32 cases were reported were as follow: Wairoa, 3; Ilawke's Bay, 1; Taranaki, 1; Hiiwera, 2; AVanganui, 7; Palmerston North, 2) Wellington, H; anil Wairarapa, 2. ' Discussing the increase in the number of influenza, cases with a Dwiixiox reporter yesterday, Dr. 11. H.' Watt, District Health Officer, remarked that as the population of the Wellington Public Health District was about 400,030, the fact that 32 cases of influenza were reported in oue week should not be regauled with undue alarm. The influenza that was being notified was of a- N comparatively mild nature, but, never- - [ theless, tho situation was being watclied ■\Mty. closely. Following are the numbers of other . cases of infectious diseases notified to : the District Health Officer during the week ending August 25, tho feure; for>~ tlio previous week being given in paren-. theses: Scarlet fever, i (4); diphtheria, 27 (2'J); enteric fever, 2 (2); pneumonia, U (13).
