His Excellency, the Governor-General has acceded to the request of the -Ne.y Zealand Clnb to bo patron ot the club again this year.

Admiral Viscount Jellicoe has accepted the invitation of tlio i\w Zealand Club to a luncheon at the Y.JI.C.A. rooms «t 1 o'clock to-day. His Excellency the Governor-General has intimated Ins intention of being: present at the luncheon.

Mr. R. W. Bothamley will be acting cleric of Parliament and acting clerk of the Legislative Council tor the coming session. Mr. A. F. Lowe was appointed tv this position some months ago, hut lie is not to talce up his new position until a fortnight after the end of tho coming session, remaining for this session clerk of the Kotiso of Representatives.

Dr. H. W. Clenvy, lloman Catholic Bishop of Auckland, who has been in :i hospital in Hamilton for some (lays, was reported last wcck-ciul to be slightly improved. Mr. R, W. Douglas, of Wellington, has been appointed secretary of tho Manawatu, Dairy Company.

Mi\ F. W; Millar has been appointed permanent secretary of tho Public Service Association, and is resigning from his position in the Public Service so as to enter npon his duties next month.

Mr. J. Kennedy Brown, who died on Wednesday at the residence-of his daughter, Mrs. A. C. O'Neill, 'Mamma, at the age of 88, came to New Zealand from ■\ustralitt in 1876. He was a native of Dunoon, Scotland, and left Home for Australia as a young man of 20.. He settled at Becchworth, Victoria, and for some' years was Mayor of that town. Ho was connected with the Australian Mutual Provident Company in Auckland until four or five years ago, _when falling health necessitated his retirement.

Major K. L. Caldwell, M.C., D.S.C. and bar, and Belgian Croix de Guerre, who recently returned from active service, is a son of Mr. D. U. Caldwell, of Auckland and formerly of Wellington. Major Caldwell, who is at present stayin" with Mr. J. D. Ritchie on Wellington Terrace, graduated for flying at the Auckland School of Aviation, and at tho beginning of 1916 wont Home and joined the Royal Flying Corps. In July of that year he went to France, where ho did service in the air until October. 11)17. "\Mien that ended, he proceeded to Burmah in 1856, and afterwards served with his regiment, H.M. 35th Royal Sussex, in Bengal, throughout the' trying period of the Indian Mutiny. He devoted most of his time later to tho study of New Zealan.. insects, tho beetles more particularly. He was the author of the work on "New Zealand Coleoptern," which ran into several volumes.
