Tlie Union Company's large cargo steamer Waltomo arrived at Auckland from Lyttelton- la3t Tuesday after a prolonged passage from Lyttelton of four days and a half. In ordinary circumstances sho should have arrived 011 Sunday night, but Bhe was considerably delayed by stormy weather. She left Lyttelton at 10 p.m. on Thursday, and experienced strong '■head winds until reaching tho East Capo at 4 p.m. on Sunday. On rounding tho East Cape sho ran into a hard north-north-east g'ale. accompanied by a lioavy son. So severe was tlie galo that she was hove-to from 5 p.m. on Sunday to 7 a.m. on Monday, and during that timo sho was constantly shipping seas thatflooded her decks foro and aft. Yory little damage was done. However, 0110 hoary sea waßlied away part of the covering on one of the hatches, but it was made,secure before much water had found its way into tho hold. At 7 a.m. on Monday the wind changed to the north-west, and moderated. The Waitomo then resumed her voyage, and made better progress to port. At Auckland slie is to go Into dock for cleaning and painting. Her movements after docking have not been announced. TIIE PORT HACKING. The .transport Port Hackinc, which arrived at Lyttelton on Wednesday morning from Loudon ivith troops returning to the Duminloa, waa-origlnally ths Minuro. Sho is a Commonwealth and Dominion liner, and was built for that company in 1900 by Workman, Olark, and Co.. Ltd., at Dolfast. Sho registers 6225 gross tons, lier longth is 440 feel, beam 55 ieet, and depth 30 feet. Tlio Port Hacking is under tho command of Captain S. O. After discharge at the northern port she will proceed to Wellington to continue her unloading, from Wellington sho will go to Lyttelton, and will subsequently sail for. Dunedin. THE STRANDED AR-APAWA. A further attempt to refloat the Northern Company's steamer Arapa-wa, which .stranded on- tho Waitara Bar on August 3, was made recently without suocess. Although, the vessel was not refloated, her position was improved. The salvage operations resulted in turning her bow see,ward and placini: her. in a position where sho rests entirely on a sandy bottom, clear of the bouldcrß. Sho was also moved bodily seaward about 35ft. Another attempt was to have been made lust Tuesday, but it. wis postponed owing to the tides not being sufficiently full to allow the Rimu to approach neat- enouyli to be of assistance. Tbe steamer Masula, which is en route from Now York-, and Norfolk (Virginia) ivith general freight and a part cargo- of coal to Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin, |is a 0 new twin-screw vessel of MOO tons gross- register. She was -launched this year from the yards of Messrs. Barclay, Curie and Co., Ltd., at Glasgow. Sha is due at Vuoltland about August 29, and should arrive at Dunedin about the middle of Sentember. From Oook Strait lighthouses the Government steamer Hinemoa returned to Wellington on Friday. As the vessel ivas unable to land at Jackson Bead she proceeded to Tho Brothers, afterwards calling at Stephen Island, Astrolabe Bay, and Okurl Polut. It has been tho general opinion in shipping circles that following the closo of the war thero would bo a decided drop in tho valu# of sailing vessels, but such a condition lias not developed as yet. On the contrary, says the New York "Journal of Commerce," sailing vessels are ill good demand, and in spito of the faot that shipyards continue to launch schooners there is still a dearth of that clos# of vos6el. As a Consequence, thero is an upward tendency in the price of hulls, and 'iwnors who three months ago were ■willing to sell are, now refusing anything but a top prico for their craft.
