MR. MATIIESON'S PLATFORM. At Eketahuna on Friday night Mr. W. B. Jlatlicsou, Parliamentary candidate for Masterton electorate, addressed a meeting of electors. The Mayor was in tlio chair. Jlr. Matheson insisted on the need for a more pronounced spirit of service being shown by all citizens, a readiness to make some personal sacrifice for the common good, and he laid down the following proposals, some of which, he said, had not been voiced before on our political platform . 1. A higher standard of school buildings must bo provided promptly, without hesitation on account of the money needed. 2. Average salaries of school teachers to" be increased 5 per cent, per annum each year for at least iive years, until we fiiid tho profession attracting and holding our finest men and women. 3. Our svstem of taxation must be placed under one control and shaped -with more regard to equity and simplicity making tho chief basis. Income tax to provide at least 50 per cent, of revenue, property tax to provide 25. per cent., and death duties the balance. The doing away with Customs duties ■would at once lower t-io coat of living, protection to lccal industries being given b* straight-out grants. '4. That cost of living shall bo further helped by a, straight-out grant to mothers of, say, 10s. a month per child, from birth to 14 years. Such a grant would bo some acknowledgment 'by tho State of its indebtedness to mothers and would increase our birth-rate. 5. Shipping rates to be controlled by allowing (on actuarial estimates) profits limited to 10 per cent. If the powerful shipping combines refuse these termß, New Zealand capital can be found for .' investment at such rates of interest, • under the present Government mail subsidies. G. Meat and dairy produce profiteering to be kept in check by New 'Zealand producers combining to keep open one shop in each of four British cities, where our produce shall be sold all the year round out of cool storage at a price equalling New Zealand values, plus working expenses. 7. Where returned soldiers are taking U)) laud with Government assistance at market rates, that after residing five veal's a rebate in upset price shall be allowed of 5 per cent, for each veur of service, the same to be made up out of public revenue, if .£2,000,000 will do it. 8. To make it compulsory for wealthy landholders to mako their own valuation annually, on which taxation shall be levied, the State to have power to compel the cutting up and settling a proportion of siicli valuable holdings at tho owner's valuation, plus 10 per cent, for disturbance.
