AMERICAN SENATE COMMITTEE ADOPTS A RESOLUTION TERRITORY TO BE HANDED OVER By Telegraph—Press Association-Copyright (Rec. August 24, 5.5 p.m.) \ Washington, August 23. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee has adopted a resolution in favour of amending the Peace Trea'.y to provide for the return of Shantung to China immediately. Professor E. T. Williams, technical adviser to the American Peace Delegation, giving evidence before the Committee, detailed an interview with President Wilson on the subject of Shantung, in which President Wilson admitted that the Anglo-Japanese agreement made a settlement such as China desired impossible. Professor Williams urged the,restoration of Shantung to China at any cost, as China had entered the war upon American advice. His personal opinion was that giving way to Japan would mean loss of prestige to the- United States. He did not' doubt that Japan would carry out her promises, but Tsinetau would still continue to be a Japanese possession—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. JAPAN EXPECTS COMPENSATION ELSEWHERE. (Rec. August 24, 5.5 p.m.) New York, August 23. The New York "Times's" Peking correspondent states that it is reported that the Japanese Minister appeared at. the Chineso Foreign Office, and announced that Japan was prepared to return Kiaochau to China within two years. In return Japan, would expect compensation elsewhere. The correspondent adds: "This means that Japan will want privileges in Manchuria or Mongolia,"—Aus.N.Z. Cable Assn. BITTER STRUGGLE OVER SHANTUNG EXPECTED IN CONGE-ESS. (Rec. August 24, 11.15 p.m.) Washington, August 23. A bitter struggle is expected to develop on tho floor of the Hctiso regarding Shantung.
