THE PRICE OF MEAT
HOW TO AVOID AN INCREASE. Sir,—We gather l'rom tho newspapers that fat stock is very scarce, and that the consumers will have to pay an advance .on. the present very liigli priccs for meat. We also learn tluit tho freezing chambers are fu'H of meat, that there would be relief soon, but it would not be 'sufficient to clear them all before next stsison begum.
The meat in store lias been bought by Government at an average price less than sixpence per pouud. 1 suggest tbat local butchers should be supplied from the freezing works at cost price, and bo .allowed to charge a moderate increase for soi'ving it out. Also, if this is not sufficiently effective, tho Government should have regular lots auctioned in joints in tho various towns. Farmers would no doubt be glad to get high prices for any fat stock, but for long their meat lias been commandeered at moderate price; and tho pric; M' their wheat fixed. They have played their part in keeping down the cos-t of living, and bean glad to do it. It is now to the interest of tho whole country to get the cost of living reduced 'by all means possible.—l am, etc., FARMER,
