PAYMENT OF EXPENSES
When a deputation of producers interested in the meat export trade wailed 011 Jlr. Massey some (Uijs ago, tho suggestion was made that a committee of producers should bo sent ITome, accredited by tho Government, to make certain inquiries and to do certain other work in Ellwand. Tho question of payment of the committee's expenses was not raised, and in liis reply Mr. Massey assumed that this .was not part of the 'request, and lie said something to this c/fccl. He wn.s quite in agreement with the suggestion that the committee ghould gi. Home. Since then.atsubsequentmeetirigs of producers, the suggestion lias 'been made that the committee should be 6ont at the expense of t.he Government. This was brought to the notico of Mr. Massey yesterday. "Whether tho members of the committee pay their own expenses, or whether tho expenses are paid by tihe State is, after all, a very small matter," aid Mr. Massey in reply. "Tho business in which they are interested is an important matter for tho Dominion. If it is rea'lty necessary that the expenses .should bo paid by the Stale, I am nuite willing to ask Parliament to provide the necessary finance. I may explain that, when the deputation met mo the other day I was under .the impression that no request was being made for financial aid, but only for Government recognition of the committee,"
