" , The new steamer Somerset, on her maiden voyage to the Dominion, arrived from Homo, via Lyttelton, in the stream at it late hour on Thursday night, and berthed yesterday. The vessel left Colon three days after the Port Hacking, and Teaclicd her destination a few hours beforn that vessel. ' The Somerset is an iup-to-dato vessel and a recent addition to tho British mercantile marine. Sho is the experimental steamer with regard to a new type of geared turbine, described as tho "Double reducto geared turbine." The construction of the Somerset was completed at Earlo's shipbuilding yards shortly before tho close of last year. Immediately after her trials she was taken to a loading hcrth for Australia. Her British officers and rjow were reoruited amongst men awaiting ships, several of them having lost their previous ship owing to enemy action. She has a tosi tonnage of 9773, her length is 482 ft„ and beam 62ft. Her shaft horse-power is 4550, and she averaged an hour on her maiden voyage. The vessel has a cruiser 6tcrn, and has a carrying caDacity for about IO.CC'O tons of carg;. Sho has spacious hatchways, fed by Die lntest appliances for the rapid handling of cargo. The dccks aro wide, and saloons comfortably furnished.- At present much of tho vessel's dock space is absorbed by , troopship fittings, r.ooms, etc. The Somerset- is equipped with two collapsible steel masts, each supporting six long derricks, controlled by powerful winches.
