Dr. Archer Hosting, who recently arrived by the transport Port Hacking, returned to Masten.ou yesterday. Air. Donald, who is retiring from the Civil Service, leavi-s Mastertoii to-day j..-r Wellington. Jio has been succeeded ns inspector of factories by Mr. F. V. Sanderson, of Dunedin. A conference ol : representatives of tho Mastertoii Borough Council and County Council and Lansdowno residents was held yesterday afternoon with a view to defining the boundaries for the proposed amalgamation ot Lansdowno with the Borough of Mastertoii. The various bodies concerned will be asked to confirm the result of the conference, and supply additional information. ' The death occurred in Mastorton yesterday morning of Mr. Edward .Braggins, sen:, an old. identity of the Wairarara district. Mr. -Braggins, who was 77 years of age, came' to New Zealand in ; tho early 'forties, and shortly afterwards went to Greytown. Later he camo to Mflsberton, and took over the Kiiihvay Hotel, popularly known as the "Tojj Ilmisu." His recollections of the Maori risings were particularly clear, as also were his stories of tho earlier pioneering days. After severing hi= connection witli Hotel Mr. Braggins conducted Various butchery and carrying busi-. ncsses. Ho was responsible for the formation of the first Fire Brigade and first brass band in Mastorton. He is survived by five sons and daughters, and a largo number of grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.
Eleven soldiers who returned to Mastorton last evening were motored to tho Post Office, and awarded the usual civic reception, speeches being delivered by the Mayor, Mr. W. 11. Jackson, Mr. G. E. Sykes, M.P., and Mr. A. P. Whatman Later, several men were motored through to their homes in'Groytown.
One hundred and twenty couples attended. the dance held in the Municipal Hall, Mastertoii, last evening, under tho auspices of the legal and banking professions, stock and station agents, and dentists. The success of the function was due in no .small measure to tho' masters of ceremonies, Messrs. K. Milne, E. Bundle, .T. Miller. J. Heifer, and the secretary, Mr. W. Iloare. A committee of ladies provided supper in the social hall, and during an adjournment prizes were presented to tho ladies who had won the races held on the day of tho recent football mate)!.
