COAL SHORTAGE
; AN IMPROVED OUTLOOK : SUPPLIES FOR RAILWAYS AN OFFICIAL STATEMENT "According to the returns received in the' Coal Control Branch," said the Hon. Arthur Myers, Minister in Charge yesterday, "the outputs -from the principal mines throughout' New Zealand show a decrease of tons for the first seven months of this year as compared with tho corresponding months' of 1918, the . figures boing 961,920 tons and 1,132,1CG tons respectively. Unfortunately, the largest decrease was in hard coal from tho West Coast mines, which accounted for 111,797 tons of the total decrease. . On the ether hand, iMr. Myers was glad to say that the efforts of his Department had resulted in 213,937 tow of coal being imported from overseas during the period twitter review, which was 56,629 tons in excess of the quantity imported during the seven months ended July 31, 1918, thereby making the net decrease liv coal available from both sources for distribution, 110, Gil tons. _ Continuing, the Minister stated tfta-t during the present month to date 21,735 tons of coal 1 had arrived at Now- Zealand ports from overseas in the following vossels:— | . . Total 30,442 Of this quantity' 24,842 tons have been allocated to. railways. The railways' will therefore receive from this source during August and September 70,229 tons, in Addition to their allocations from the New Zealand mines, averaging 8500 tons monthly,- including brown coal and jute, making a grand total of approximately 87,229 tons for the two months mentioned. Tho Minister pointed out also that the position would be appreciably relieved -whon the maritime strike in Australia • ■was ended,. ias several vessels would be dispatched from- New Zealand to coal as soon as a settlement was reached.
