Before tho Conciliation Council the dispute between the Canterbury Sheeownern' Union and the Canterbury Shearers' Union was heard. The dispute was rafher unusual in that the case was brought by the employers, and not 'by .the workers. The employers' main propo?ols were:— Hours of work, 5 a.m. to 5 p.m.; shearing to stop at i p.m. on Saturdays. Hates of pay—2ss. per 100, with rations, in addition to bonus of ss. per 100; in cases where shearers find their own rations, extra Is. per 101) to be paid. The rate for stud sheep shall. bo settled by Agreement. The rate for shearing hogget rams, rato and a half; for other rams, double rates. Hales for shed hands—Pressers and rollers, J7s. (id. per week; all' ether hands, 455.; cooks, (155.; cooks' assistants. 155., in addition to n bonus per 100 to all weekly bands. Pressors and roller? when 3iot employed by the week shall be paid Is. sd. per hour; other shed hands, Is. 4d., in addition to a, bonus of 3d. per lionr. Where workers provide their own rations nn extra 15s. per week shall be paid. The workers asked for .>2s. Oil. per 100, with rations, and double rates for shearing rams, stags, and double-lleeced sheep. I'ive pound per week was asked for rollers and £i for other shed hands. Cooks, ,iC6 to ,£B, and cooks' assistants, ,£5 10s. After consideration a flat'rate of 30s. per 100 was agreed to, but no settlement was reached regarding tho paymont of shed hands, ■ cooks, hours, rates for double-fleeced sheep, dagging, fares, learners, waiting time, crutching, or employment of a hutkeoper. Many other clauses vero -agreed"to, among them those relating to methods of payment of workers, control of sheds, free grazing, and contract work. The employers also undertook to import <£300 worth o? hand shears jind 'fell thSin at cost through the union.
