A UNION "TICKLER"
'' BRISKLY-WORDED CIRCULAR. Tho "Tramway Tickler" is the name given by many' of the recipients to a circular issued on behalf of the Amalgamated Railway and Tramway Association, in Sydney, by Mr. Claude Thompson, the general secretary (says the Sydncv "Sim"). Tho New Permanent Way Union has been formed since the big industrial trouble of 1917, and its members are not regarded by thoso of tho older organisaj tion as being spotless "lily-whites.' • About 1000 men have received the circular. which reads: _ . . Dear Sir,—Our association has directed me to demand that you pay JII lis. 3d. arrears of contributions, forthwith. The r-.mount is made up ns follows—From March to December, 1!)1S, three quarters at 3s. 9d.—'lis. 3d.; 1919; XI in advance, as per new I'ule. Total, .£1 lis.-. 3d. As you are no doubt aware, it has been, decided by the Full Industrial Court in the cases of Thompson v. Young, and the Gas Workers' Union. v. M'Laren, that members not resigning in accordanco with registered rules are liable for all contributions, levies, and tines imposed by tho union. Rejiorts or these cases are enclosed for you to read. You have paid nA'hing to the union for about 20 months. How would you liko it if Tsar Eraser kept you waiting years for your wages. You would drag him into Court, would you not? Well, that's what will happen to you, unless yuu make vourself financial .immediately. During the 30 years of its existenca the Amalgamated has consistently fought for and obtained improved conditions and higher pay for railway and tramway men, has expended thousands or pounds on wages boards, has . secured over a million pounds in wage increases for employees, and has fought many suc- | cessful fights against our common enemies —the railway- bosses. [ Mr. C. Paynter (secretary) and Harry Fisher (organiser), of the New Perman--1 ent Way Union, nnd many othersjiava already paid up—so must you. You are no doubt aware that by allowing your contributions to fall sp much into arrears von have rendered yourself liablS to a fine of. JBI. as provided for in rule 1(i. The association has no desiro to enforce this fine, aud will not do so ir you pay within 14 days from the date' of this letter. . This'offer to remit the fine is jnndo entirely-without prejudice, and is contingent upon a first payment being mado within a fortnight. Send along 10s. as an instalment. It wiil save vou trouble. Better pay up and. have done with it. Do it now.'
