LIGHTING CHARGES

QUESTION OF REDUCTION. Some discussion on tho matter of electric lighting charges took place at last night's meeting of the City Council, when Councillor J. 0. ghorland said he thought soniothing should be dono in tha direction of reducing ;the charges to small consumers.

Tho Mayor (Sr. J. P. Luke) said ho thought the council should wait a whilo before making any reductions. Under tho old system sonio of the charges were so small that it was hardly worth while sending a man round to collect thorn, 'llie council had received very few complaints regarding the change that had been made in the system of collecting accounts. However, if desired, a report could ho obtained on the matter.

Councillor Norwood stated that the electric lighting department had a considerable credit, but it would bo bad finance to use that reserve lur reducing (lie cost of lighting nt the present time.

Councillors Forsyth and Luckie considered that there should bo 110 reductions at the present juncture.

Councillor Bennett said it was only the big consumers who got the benefit of the reductions.

The. .Mayor remarked tnat tho peoplo who should get the benefit should be tho domestic consumers. As councillors seemed to desiro it, ho would Beo that a report on the question wna obtained.
