THE FIREWOOD DEPOT

— PLENTY OF BUSINESS. The Hon. Arthur Myers made some reference yesterday to tho operations of the recently-established firewood depot., Davis Street Extension. Ho said that up to tho present tho pub'.ic of Wellington had taken full advantage of the opportunity to procure good firewood at reasonable rates. He wns glad to say- that arrangements had bow been uiado with carriers tq deliver firewood from Thorndon to Hay Street, Oriental Bay, and as far as the top side of tho Basin Reservo at very reasonable rat's per bag, and negotiations were in progress to extend this system to other portions of the city and suburbs, full of which ho hoped to be aWo to announce in a day or two. Up to yesterday, the total sales amounted to jC3GO, which indicates that when tiho delivery system i:; completed a considerable incrfaso in business may be locked for, as the difficulties experienced by householders in icranging for cartage have no doubt adversely affected tho volume of business. At the present time regular supplies of iirowood are coming forward from country districts, and tho quality of sumo is giving ontire satisfaction.

The Railway Department is at present engaged in conatruefcing a siding in tho Kaitoko district to tap a fisirge area of firewood country, and ivhon completed (Supplies will be' considerably augmented from this source. There was every indication tbafc wood from this area would bo coming forward in the course of a fmv weeks, .and experts oonsider that there is in sight sufficient to meet Wellington's requirement} for mniiy years to come. "Sinco the establishment of tho doj>ot," said Mr. Myers, "two hundred and thirtyfivo cords havo been received, and in order to cope with the increased demand for bagged wood it lias been found ncccssnrv to ins'al an additional saw boncli, which now enables the depot to provide full supplies of cut wood for immediate de-livery."
