.Mr. G. Sol by lias been appointed president and ilr. J. Toomatli" secretary of tho Trades and Labour Council recently formed in Masterton,

At tho fortnightly lunoheon of the Masterton Progressive Leaguo yesterday, a report ivas submitted with .reference to a canvass of tho business people to provide £500 with which to pay an organising secretary for tho league. It was stated that Mr. Carson, of lvaiparoro, had undertaken the canvass, which lmd resulted in about ,£2OO heing guaranteed, and further promises amounting to .£IOO. It was thought that the balance of tho money might bo raised by a continuation of the canvass, but as Mr. Carson had to resume his teaching diities it would bo necessary for someone olse to take up the running. Tho executive was authorised to appoint another canvasser to secure the balance of the guarantee fund. Tho annual meeting Of the Masterton branch of tho Ladies' Auxiliary of the Navy League was presided over by Mrs. IT. 11. Beetham. Tho report stated that there were 317 members on the roll, including four life members, and 135 school members. Tho sum of t £l2Sl had been raised between January 1, 191S, and Juno 80, 1919, and in addition ;£lOl 9s. Iliad been donated towards the noace celebrations. Tho following garments had been 6ent to Wellington:—Goo scarves, 227 pairs of socks, lOSllannel shirts, 105 balaclavas, 60 pairs mittens, 30 cardigans. 30 women's garments, 30 children's garments, and 22 pairs of minesweepers' gloves, a total of 1221 garments. Sums had been distributed as follow£soo to King George's Fund, £5 to naval prisoners of war, i'so to mercantile prisoners of war, £50 toward tho dependants of thoso killed or injured in tho Zeebruggo and Ostein! raids.

A meeting of the Wairarapa Caledonian Society was held in Masterton lust night to discuss the proposed reorganisation of the Caledonian Orchestra. Mr. E. 11. Waddington presided over a good attendance. Messrs. W. J. Holder, A. Russell, A. Macdonald, D. Allan, E. Ilatton, C. Davy, and C. H. Rolph were appointed a committee to go thoroughly into the matter and mako a. report.. A meeting of the committee was held subsequently, and Mr. A. Russell was elected chairman.

The Hector suggested that the fitationmaster should stretch a point when boys had a long distance to go. , Eventually it was decided to ask Mr. Jfash, the member for the district, to see if permits could bo obtained allowing tho boys to travel.
