LIGHTING CHARGES
QUESTION OF DEDUCTION.
Some discussion on the maitor of electric lighting charges took place at last night's meeting of the City Council, when Councillor J. O. Shorlund said ho thought something should bo douo in tho direction of reducing -tho charges to small oonsumeys.
Tho Mayor (Sir. J. P. Luke) 6aid lie thought tho council should" wait ft wliilo before milking any reductions. Undor tho old system somo oi tho charges were so small that it was hardly worth wliilo sending a man round to collect them, 'iho council hxd received very few complaints regarding the change that had been made in the system oi^collecting accounts. However, it desired, a report could lie obtained 011 tho matter. Councillor Norwood stated that the electric lighting department had a considerable credit, but it would bo bad finance to use : that 'reserve l'or reducing the «xst of lighting at tho present time. Councillors Forsyth and Luckie considered that there should bo no reductions at the present juncture. Councillor Bennett said it was only tho bis consumers who got the benofit of the reductions.
