SCHOOL BOARDERS AND TRAIN SERVICES
GREAT VEXATION IN CANTER-
BURY
By Talegma!'—Pi'ftce Association.
Christohurch, August 19. Very great vexation is : being caused throughout Canterbury by. tho rofusal of the Railwav Department.'to carry, boy and girl boarders of tho big secondary schools who aro about to return to their homes for tho vacation. The Department has flatly refused to carry these young passengers, on the ground tnat their travelling is not essential. Mr* Blanch, headmaster of Christ's College, .stated to-day ihat lie was trying m every way to meet the difficulty by^.restricting the 'number of boys travelling bv train. To givo one example, lie had arranged to. have motor-cars brought from Hustings on Thursday to take eigh-' teen Christ's Collego boys from Wellington to Napier. Other boys had been sent north by the Mokoia last night, although tho term did not end until Tuesday.
, GOVERNMENT LEADERS APPEALED ! TO. f ■ | ' Christohurch, August 19. The following letter from Mr. C. B. ftevan-Browii, headmaster of the Boys High School, has been received by the Mayor of Chrietchurch: "The Railway {authorities have decided that tbey will 'not allow boys or girls to travel home lo their parents for the holidays. The uosition is absurd. Surely it is more important that they should go than* a commercial traveller 'or a side of bacon. We do not- ask for extra carriages, but that these school boarders should be allowed to travel if there is room. In our own particular case we can arrange i for motors, except for two going to the West Coast, and there is a doubt, even if thev walked over, if they woiifd bo allowed to return by rail. Girls High School boarders are, I think, in a worse oase than we are, and Christs College 1 know is hard hit. ns are all boarduig schools in the-Dominion. • It is for the principle of the thing I wish you to wire that school children going to their homes and returning are essential travellers." In response to this letter and other representations, the Mayor lias telegraphed to tho National Government leaders, as ho considers the matter is one for Cabinet, and not for the Railway Department.
AWKWARD POSITION AT TIMARU. By Telegraph—J'rese Association. Tlmaru, August 19. The railway policy of not currying sohool boarders homo for the vacation is cnnsiiiK i maximum of inconvenience at, tho Timaru High Schools owing to the announcement of tlie policy not being made till this morning, practically eight hours before the schools break up. The first notice (through the Press) was that pupils would lie carried on payment of full fare, and boys from Otago havo been carried through Canterbury. The Timaru stationmaster asked Christchurch for instructions in the middlo of last week, but no answer was received till tliis morning, wbon ho was instructed t.hat scholars wero not to bo allowed to travel. About HO boarders at tho Timaru Hiirh Schools aro affected. They cannot be kopt at tho schools, as the domestic staffs are entitled to holidays. Tho lateness of the Department's veto makes it specially difficult to make other arrangements.
