WELCOME TO H.M.S. NEW ZEALAND
Sir.-Owing to the Mayor's wise determination nof to declare a Lohday for Wednesday next in honour ot the arrival in Wellington of 11.M.5. New Zealand, there appears to be a reasonable prospect of the reception fulling flat. All me speakers stated that if there were no holiday there would be no boats to meet the warship, which in these days of unsettled weather, may not be a very great calamity. In order that there might be a reception, and one perhaps inoi;e effective and appealing to those on the .New Zealand, might I suggest a simple means of welcoming the gift ship and _ her august passenger? My suggestion is to use (lie school children in such a way that would Rive .Tellicoe's men a fine reception and at the same time delight^the children, f would propose the children be asked to "man" the foreshore in a single line from .Point Jerninghaurto the Tnranaki Street Wharf, each child to carry the flag used at peace time, the same io bo waved at given times on a signal being given as the ship passes. This idea' is rendered feasible since the New Zealand is to berth at the Queen's Wharf, and will necessarily have to keep close in to Oriental Bay, Clyde Quay, ami To Aro, in order to sweep up to her berth at that wharf; and the plan is simplified by only using those schools within inarching distance of the waterfront. Tho Eoseneath and Clyde Quaychildren could bo located in Oriental Bay, the Mt. Cook Schools and the Willis Street School on tho Clyde Quay Wharf and along the To Aro reclamation, and the-Terrace School children on the laranaki Street and the Jervois Quay wharves. Ido not think there would be much difficulty in "manning the walls of the Te Aro Baths and the Boat Harbour so "us to present an unbroken lino of flau-wavers from Point Jeriuugham to Jervois Quay. If hands could U- stationed at the'rotunda in Oriental Bay and on the Clyde Quay and "laranab Street; Wharves so much the better and brighter.-! am, etc.,
