PETONE ITEMS
The effect of the coal shortage is being seriously felt in Petone, and lighting: restrictions arc the order of the day. All street lighting was cut out some time ago, and now lights outside .business premises have also been forbidden. As a result the town presents a most forlorn appearance at night-time. On the eve of his departee to take to farming pursuits in Ithe Otaki district, Mr. Jenkins, a popular member of the municipal gas department, was met by other members of the staff and presented with a set of military hair brushes as a mark oi esteem. Mr. Cowie, the borough engineer, in making the presentation, referred in eulogistic terms to the qualities of the recipient, and wished him every success in hia new venture. Mr. Jenkins suitably responded. Cabled advice has been received that Sergeant 0. A. Linehan, a formor resident of Petone, who left with the Seventh Reinforcements, is" returning home;, by the Hororata next month.- Sergeant Lmchan hag seen considerable service in Gallipoli and Palestine, and has been, twice wounded.
At the annual meeting of the Petone Municipal Band the election of officers for • the ensuing year resulted a3 follows :-Pntron, Hon; T. .M. AVilford, M.P.; president, Mr. J. W. M'Ewan; conductor, Mr. W. Eades; bandmaster, Mr. E. Ambler;' drum-major, Mr. H. fioso; band eergeant, Mr. A. Ccok; librarian, Mr. Jollnnds; secretary,-. Mr. A. Fraser. It was decided to 'purchase a new Eet of instruments as soon as funds becamo available, and to obtain the necessary funds it was decided to give band performances on the Esplanade, and also.to hold an art unionon an extensive scale.
