LOCAL TOURNAMENTS.
Good progress is being made- in tho Wellington Chesa Club's iinmial championship tourney, the retirement from which of Messrs. Davies, Still, and Leo is grcutly regrottetl. last Thursdays game between Jlchsm. Barnes and W. E. Mason, Not.- Zealand's two record champions, proved both interesting and mftvactiyK A well-judged siicrifico enabled Barnes'to gain a centre pawn, and ho 6ubscq'uontly won the exchange (rook for knight) by a neat application of what ohrcs problemist's call "the interference theme." Tho issue- was then only a. matter of time, Mason resigning at move 44. The feature of tho recent rounds has been the fine form of Stanley Gyles. He won from Messrs. Barnes, Mason, and 11. A. Ward in quick succession, and hud. a win on against Kelling, who had a lucky "ret-oft" through Gyles delivering his final blow on the wrong square. The game which W. Mnukay won from Purchas on Thursday was the hitter's first reveTse. The game Fouhy v. Godtamalk was drown. Mr. .Tamos has several games marked incomplete, owing to the present state of the suburban train service. Tho fellies of those who -have scored more than half their games iiro «s follow,:—W. The best scores to date in tho dub's annual "Petherick" tournament (handicap) are as fallow:—Barnes, 54—}; Kov. Braddoclr. 5-2; Grady, 5-3; B. f>. Taylor, 4-2; S. Maekay, 3-2; W. C. White, 3-2; and S. I'anlknor, 2-1, The lenders in the annual handicap tourney of the Working Men's Club are as follow :-S. Faulknor, 7-0; W. C. White, 111— k; Burgess, 3V-li; Barnes, 2!— J; H. Anderson, 3-3; and Eton, 1-0. The best tallies in the club's annual draughts tourney are as follow:— J. Reid, 23J—41; Miinson, 15-6; Larking, 19—11; J.'Wriffht, 11-9; Coulter. U-U; Burgess, 5—3; and Boock, 9—7. This is. a scaled handicap contest.
Mr. D. Purchns is lending in the Wellington South Club's animal handicap tourney, with seven clear wins. Mr. G. P. Anderson, last year's winner, is oloio up with G wins and 1 loss, There are only four more rounds to 'be disposed of.
