A FOUL CRIME
THE ORAMAHOE TRAGEDY.

II appears that Ihimaera Haratu, an old Maori, aged CO Tears, lived alono with his step-mster, Mary Ann Takimoana, aged 70, in an isolated whare on the hillside. The old couple were drinking tea prior to retirin» on Thursday night when they heard heavy steps descending the hill and approaching the entrance to the whare. A stranger called out, "Kia Oral", and Ihimaera went out and invited him to have a cup of tea. ■ t ■ The reply was a bullot in tlw left arm, probably from n revolver. He turned back into tho whare to obtain something with which to defend hinisJf . In tho meantime the- woman had come to the door to see what the matter was, and wa.i shot twice, once through the heart. The assailant then fired on Ihimaera again, wounding him in the breast and in the left arm. The night was very [dark, and the assailant disappeared quietly in the darkness.
