WORKERS' DWELLINGS

PURCHASE OF SECTIONS POSITION REGARDING PETONE HOUSES In a few days' time the Labour Department expects to be able to complete arrangements for the purchase of sections on which to erect 75 workers' dwellings in Wellington. As soon as the land has been obtained tenders will bo called for the erection of tile houses. Tho total number of house* to lie buiit by tho Department in the Dominion is 200, and it is hoped to be able io call tenders for the erection of 100 in other parts than Wellington at the same time as the tenders for the Wellington quota are. called. Negotiations lor the acquisition of land not being sufficiently far forward, the arrangements for (ho erection of the remaining 25 houses will bo determined a little later on. At tho last meeting of tho Petone Borough Council it was reported that 13 to 21) workers' dwellings would bo erected in Petone, but definite information as to the date was not yet available. This led one of the councillors to remark that something definite on tho point would be beard ''on the day before the General Election." When the matter was brought under the'notice of the Secretary of Labour (Mr. i\ W. Rowley) by a Dominion* reporter, he said that the. General Election hail nothing to do with the decision as to (.lie number of dwellings to be allocated to Petone. "As a matter nf fact." remarked Mr. Rowley, "the Workers' Dwellings Hoard has now decided ou 15 houses for Petone. This means that out of the 75 to 1)0 erected in Wellington and suburbs, lb wijl Ijo hiiill. in Petone, leaving 01) to lie constructed in Wellington itself. Tho dccisiou as to the actual number ot houses to bo allocated to Petone was merely hung up until it was ascertained precisely how many of the Wellington applicants could bs provided for at Pe> tone instead of in tho city."
