» Lieut.-Colonel (temporary Colonel) J. E. Hume, 11.NZ.A., who Jias been in illhealth recently anil who lately commanded the Wellington Military District, has .retired. Colonel Hume before the war commanded the .Regiment of Royal New Zealand Artillery, and towards tlio end of l!ll-l was appointed to the command of the Auckland .Military District; He then received command of the Wellington Military District, an appointment Which lie held for three years nntil illhealth obliged him to relinquish his duties. The esteem in which the late' Chief Judge Jackson Palmer (of the Kative Land Court) was held was evidenced by the large attendance at his funeral yesterday afternoon. Among those present were Sir Joseph Ward, lion. W. D. 8. M-acDenald, iir. C. It. Jordan (T.ndei',Secretary of the 'Native Lands Department), Sir Jolm Sal 111011 d (Solieitor(ienerni), Sir. I'. S. K. Hnckworth (lor some years Judge I'aimer's associate), and many other members of the J.'ubiic Service .and legal profession in AYellington. 'l'he service at the graveside at Ivarori was conducted by the Kev. A. 1. 1). Page, of St. Mark's. Captain ]'. B". Henderson. M.C., has been ap]K>inted chief instructor to the musketry and machine-gun school ,at Trentham. '.Mr. .1. S. Hiddlcslone. the well-known Wellington cricketer, who is about to leave 011 a business journey to Ivngland, was farewelled by the staff- of Messrs. Sarffood, Soil and Kwen 011 Thursday afternoon. The general manager (Mr. C. G. Wilson), on behalf of the staff, presented Mr. Hiddleslone with .1 gold watch and a. silver cigareffo ease, aa farewell tokens of esteem, and expressed regret at the departure of one who had proved himself a worthy colleague and, 111 evary respect, a, thorough "sport."
Mr. li. B; Smith, inspector of llie Bank of Australasia in New Zealand, is retiring after dfi years' service with the rank. Mr. Smith joined the bank in 1873, at Du nod in. Ho was appointed inspector in Now Zealand (the chief executive .officer in the Dominion) in succession to the late Mr. A. P. Webster, who was appointed general manager for the Ba.uk of Australasia in Melbourne. Mr. :Smith will'-be succeeded by Mr. Percy H. Cox, manager of the Bank of Australasia nt Christchure-h for the post nine years. 'Mr. ,Johan Emil Li.udberg, a wellknown. draper, of V\ ellington, died suddenly at his residence, 1U Hataitai Road, Hat.iitai, on Thnnsday afternoon. The late Mr. Lindberg, who 61 years of agei was a native of S'wenen, and came to New Zealand some twenty'ftvo to thirty years ago. He entered tho employment of Mr. Donnelly, draper, of Courtenay riace, and subsequently married one of liis employer's daughters. In 1897 Mr. Lindberg started in business ■as'a draper on his ott'n account in Cuba Street.' About two years ago lie -retired. ' The late 'Mr. Lindberg leaves .a widow and two'grown-up daughters. Tli9 death occurred at Waipawa on Tuesday last of one of Ha.wke's Bayls oldest 'residents. Mr. Charles Grenside, at tho. age of 83. Deceased arrived m New Zealand in lS'it, and. after a short stay in Auckland, proceeded to Hawko's Bay, in which province lie had resided until tho time of his death. < He had been in the towmftiip of Wa-ipiwa since 1861. His wifo predeceased him by two years. Mr. iGrenside is survival by fivo sons and three daughters, on© of thiv former being Mr. M. G. Grenside, of Wellington. ■
