PHILOSOPHICAL SOCIETY

TECHNOLOGICAL SECTION. The Technological Section of tho Philosophical Society met last evening, and was presided over by Mr. S. H. Jenkinson. A paper prepared by Mr. B. E. Robertson on the Wcstiughouso brako was read. This was highly technical ii> character and of interest to exports, oi'ly. There were nujnorous diagrams and sketches to illuminate the paper. Mr. F. W. Furkcrt, superintending engineer of tho Public Works Department, read ;>. short paper on "Evaporation" -from Manoburu Dam, in Central Otago. Tho paper gave- the details of the evaporation winch actually takes place at tho point tho water is stored, nleo in the Ida Valley, whoro irrigation is being carried on. Tho evaporation was obtained by actunl measuring of the bulk by which tho reservoir decreased day by day, and not by any in(feirential method. The observations showed .that the evaporation vas u'eater -,than the rainfall, and the results \.ero found to be reasonably consistent with those obtained in otlior similar arid regions, and as far as.they hayo gono show that the assumption on which tho irrigation works'hare been based was reasonably correct.
