The ox-Gorman steamer Giessen (Com--inonwealth and Dominion Line, agents) arrived at Premantlc on Monday ovening. The vossel, which has returning troops on board, should reach Wellington about August 25,
A good many of tho mercantile vessels I surrendered by tho Germans under tho armistice terms have been brought to Lelth to be reconditioned •and fitted for the trade of British owners, says tho ''Shipping World." Among tho number is'tho Giessen, a vessel of about 7000 tons .gross. This steamer was required for tho transport of New Zealand troops returning to their homes, and the work of transforming the vessel was entrusted to a Leith firm. The interior of the vessel had to be almost ontiroly gutted and fitted up for the comfort of tho men during the long voyage to New Zealand. Accommodation has been provided for 1200 men and 52 officer?., and among tho interesting features of the equipment are ahospjtal, dispensary, operating room, and Isolation wards. Amnio provision has been made for recreation and amusement. A largo music room, smoking room, swimming baths, and a gymnasium are to be found on the vessel. TO LOAD AT NAPIEE. The Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company roported yesterday that the steamer Oaniapa is coming out to Napier; whero she will be loaded under that company's auspices. The Oamana is a hew steamer built in 1918, and is owned by tho Bluo Star Line. Her tonnage is given as 5561 ind her principal dimensions are as follow :-Length, 390.7 ft.; breadth, 5?.2ft.; and depth, 24.7 ft. Tho Sydney "Shipping List" statos that the vessel left London on July 8. Tho Oamana, which has a stern of tho cruiser pattern, is duo at Napier about Monday next, and will load solely there-a oargo of meat .only for London.
TAINUI BRINGS TROOPS. Tho Shaw, Savlll, and Albion Company havo focoived cable advice of the departure of the Tainui from Plymouth, on August 8. Tho vessel Is In ballast, and is bringing a draft of returning troops. Sho should reach Wellington about September 23. ■ •
COEINTHIO WITH TEOOPS. Oable advice has been received by the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Lino that tho Oorinthic left Plymouth on August 9, in ballast, and with returning troopH, bound for Wellington. Sho should arrivo at this port about Soptomber 24.
. THE WAP. SOLDIER. Messrs. Murray, Roberts, and Co., Ltd., advised yesterday that tho War Soldier is to leave Auckland to-mororw for Wellington;. Tho vessel has toiiß of basic .phosphate for discharge, and. a quantity of tea. On completion of discharge at Wellington tie vessel is to proceed to Newcastle' to bunker, and will then in all probability load a cargo of wheat in Australia for tho United States.
ZBAIiANDIO LEAVES DURBAN. The Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company have:•received advice that the Zealandic loft Durban on August 1 for Promantle and Sydney. The veßsel, which'has Australian troops on board, is to come on to New Zealand to load for Home, beine due in' theso waters early in September!
SHROPSHIRE FOR HOME. ..The'Shropshire Is. to leave Napier on Saturday night for Wellington. The vessel will sail for Liverpool, via Panama, . at daybreak on August 2i. THE EUPLECTELA... . It is hoped to dispatch tho oilcarrier Euploctela for Lyttelton and Duncdin to-inorrow evening or on Friday. The following steamers were expected to be within range of Auckland wireless station last night:—Arahura, Pateena, Western Comet, E. B. The schooner Northern Chief left Newcastle, on Monday, bound for Auckland. Tho barquentine Scnorita was towed out to sea yesterday by the Pelican. Tho baroTientine is bound for Grcymouth to load timber for Sydney.
Huddart-Parker, Ltd., intend dispatching tho Uiiisaroa for Sydney with male pa'»sengers only, but no date for her departure has yet been fixed.
After dischargo of her cargo in Greymouth the Ngatoro will load there for Wanganui and New Plymouth. She will later proceed to Wellington for overhaul. Next Mofiday the Kowhai and Kennedy are both to bo relaunched from the Patent Slip. The Kapuni and tho Kapiti will then go up for cleaning, painting, and general overhaul.
For Newcastle tho Union Company's col. lier Wanaka is to leave Wellington on Friday.

Tho Western Ooinct left Auckland last ovening bound for Boston and New York. Tho Government steamer Tutanekai is to proceed tq Lyttelton to-day. where she is to be slipped for cleaning and painting. Tho Ngakuta is expected to load a cargo amounting to a 1000 tons of coal at Greymouth for Wellington at tho ond of next week.
Tho Ngahero is to leavo at noon to-mor-row for Auckland, taking cargo.
Tho Ma'tatua is oxpectcd to leave Auckland to-day or to-morrow for Wellington. Captain J. Ryan joined the Katoa as master yesterday in place of Captain R. Davics.

Tn his last report the harbourmaster at Wanga.nui states that he obtained soundings at tho entranco on July 9 and 26. On the latter date tho sounding* were equal *o, 23ft. at high water springs and 17ft. at high water neaps. From tho end ot tho moles to heads wharf tho least water in this reach iB enual to 20ft. Nt high water springs, and 17ft. at high water neaps, In tho river channel tho minimum depth is still 13ft. (in. at hieh water, springs and 10ft. 6in. at high water neapo. During tho month. 69 vos«cls entered and 0 departed, giving an aggrcgato tonnage of 43,965 tons. Tho tonnage for ono ocean liner in the roadstead was 12,300.
Mossrs. Armstrong, Whitworth, and Co., Ltd., Newcastle, have, if is slated, rocolycd orders from tho Cunard Company for two large steamers of the intermediate class. Tho firm are also building a largo passenger stoamcr for fhn V. and O. Oom-pany.-"Sliipping World." Tho steamer Baron Elcho, which arrived at Fromantlo on July 11, reported that the vessel, which, was noticeably battered and patohed up, was onco torpedoed, once mined, and five times attacked and shelled by U-boats, and had amnzing experiences. On ono occasion the master had to run the vcpsdl nshorc on ono of the Shotland Islands to escape ennturn hy the onemy. This, was when bound to Archangel .with a cargo of explosives, and on another occasion sho fought, a submarine ■for six hours when off Gibraltar. Her S.O.S. signals brought, a torpedo boat to tho rescue, which is supposed to have sunk the submarine. Captain J. M. Thomßon, mastor of tho Baron Elcho, related an incident that occurred when he was on the Baron Falrlio, hound to England from Salonika. Steaming through tho Bav of Biscay a nubmarihe was sighted early In tho morning. Nothinp further transpired until night. Tt was moonlight, and tho captain was leaning over tho rail at tho end of the bridge. He happened to look down, and was astonished to see the black chane of a submarine parallel with them under tho water. He hnstoned to tho wheel and Jammed It hard ovor, and set I tho engines at full speed and got away. |
