Tho effect of tho railway cut on tho [roads in Horowhemm County was commented on at tho monthly meoting of that body. The chairman said that on a recent dato ho had been over tho main roads, and those in good order a month ago wero now cut up, and in places there wore awful holes being gouged out and the road made rough. During tho past few months big gangs of men had been employed on the roads, which wore now again in pieces, and somo drastic- action would havo to bo taken. He believed the conl shortage question was a genuine oue. and that tho traflio would now bo by roads. JIo did not think, however, that tho council should'bo penalised on account of its geographical position, nnd no thought tho money for tho upkeep should come out of tho consolidated Jiinds. The matter was one that should bo brought before- tho Government, and if tho council did so it would get tho support of scores of local bodies. Ho thought the coal shortage would forco the tho Government to deal with tho mam arterial roads, as it would' bo seen that local bodies could not carry on under tho present conditions. At present the position was that Iho council would havo to go in for a lingo overdraft or lot the roads get into a bog. Councillor Ryder said tho man using (ho road should be "hit," nnd ho would, therefore, liko to bco a tyro tax imposed by tho Government, whilo Councillor Harkness regretted that member* of Parliament did not take a lead in tho matter.
