GOVERNMENT STATISTICIAN'S FIGURES. Thn cost of living index number, as compiled by the Government Statistician, for the three food groups '(groceries dairy produce and meat) shows a slight increase for the month of June, as compared with May. Tlio index number ror Juno is lf)28, as compared with 1524 for May. The number was 1553 in January of this year. _ Tho Government Statistician slates that on the Juno figures tho increase in the cost of foodstuffs since July. 1914. lias l>ccn 12.80 per cent. The increase m food and rents combined durin? the same period lias been 29.G7 per cent. Tt is not practicable at present, states tho Statistician, to calculate index numbers to show the increase in retail prices ovor the whole of the domestic expenditure of an averago household: but tho threo food groups and rtoit, i'i regard to which the above increase of apjiroximatelv 30 per cent, has taken .places cover (he most important and necessary items in the average domestic expenditure, and form more than half of <ha total.
