ACADEMY OF FINE ARTS
ANNUA I, REPORT.
Tho Council of the Now Zealand Academy of Fine 'Arts in its 'twentyninth annual'report-states that during tho past year 78 subscribing members and li artist members were added to the roll. Two of the oldest, members, Mr. A. T. Bate (subscribing) and Mr. Noel Bnrrand (arlisl.) were elected to life membership. Tho year closed with two life members, 313 subscribing members, and 111 artist members on tho register. Thirty-three subscribing and two artist members, whose membership commences from July 1; I'Jlil, lwve also been enrolled. In all respects the annual exhibition was a success. Not only was tho quality of the work shown well above tho standa.rd of previous years, but- the attendance was most encouraging, and the sales highly satisfactory. The number of works sold was 112, of a total value of »COBI os. A. small collection of oils, water colours, and etchings sent for exhibition and sale from the Royal Art Nocicty of New South Wales was greatly appreciated. A large number ot entries of a high order of merit cauio in- frftm all parts of the Dominion tor tlio students' competitions. The gold medal presented by Mr. Leslie J. Brabin, Wellington, for the best wok was won by Miss Marjorie Hill, and tho silver medal presented by tho secretary went to Jlrs. E. E. Graham, the'next in ordeir of merit. Both are students at tho Technical College, Wellington. Funds presented by members of the council; Miss I). K. Richmond, the late Mr. Alfred Atkins, and .Mr. T. fchaijer Weston, supplemented by a contribution from tho Academy, enabled the council to award a prize in each of nine classes. At the successful sketch exhibition opened on May 3, lflll), the attendance was largor than at any previous exhibition of n- similar character. The sketches sold numbered 87, of a total valuo of ,2178 10s. Bd. The interest shown in tho last two exhibitions jtist-ilies tho hope thai; with the coming years of peace tho Academy and the line arts generally will receive an increased measure of support from the public. The Studio Club has increased its membership, and continues to serve the very helpful purpose for which it was instituted. Thanks are due to tho trustees of the estate of the late Mr. T. G. Macarthv f«: a further grant of ,£BO, to the City Conneil for its annual grant of ,£SO, and to the Government for an additional grant of J!2O towards the salary of the custodian. Tile statement of account.'; and the balance-sheet 'show a greatly improved financial position. In accordance with the Articles of Association, the president (Mr. H. M. Gore), one vice-president: (Mr. J. Ellis), the lion, treasurer (Mr. A. Bender), four members of the council (Mis-; D. K. .Richmond, Messrs. Nugent Welch. T. Khailer Weston, and Charles Wilson), and the auditor (Mr. C. IX Morpeth, F.C.P.A.) retire from ofiico. All are eligible for re-election.
