LOWER HUTT AFFAIRS
MEETING OF COUNCIL. The meeting of tho Lower Hu.lt Borough Council' last evening was attended by tho. Mayor (Air. E. P. Rishworth), Councillor*'AV. Knisrht, AA'. Meldruiu, E. Guinc-s?, J. Mitchell, AV. Cotton, B. Hardy, A. .T. AVesl, and A. J. Hobbs. The Actinst Prime Minister and the Hon. T. M. Wilford-wroto with reference to a request from the council for the removal of the restrictions against the running of trams on the Unit Road, stating that the request had been submitted to Cabinet and was now being held over pending further consideration. —Received.
In reply to an inquiry froiji the. Chief Healtli Officer, asking whether tho council lias hnd a special clean-up week, it was decided, on the motion of the Mayor, to write to the Health Officer staling that a thorough clean-up of the district had been made.
A petition signed by some sixty residents of the borough was presented by a deputation asking that a cycle track be constructed between Lower Hutt elation and Wakefield Street. It was pointed out that tho part of the road in question was in a very bad state of repair, and the recent bad weather had not improved things. Thero was <i large nnm-. bor of constant users of this Toad and some improvement was badly needed, Tho Mayor, m reply, stated that at the present time lie could make no promise to have the work carried out, but he would ask the. engineer to have a leport. prepared showing tho estimated cost of the proposed track.
In respect to a letter from the town clerk, Petone, enclosing a, copy of a letter received from the Minister in charge of coal control in reference lo restriction!) in gas consumption in order to economise in coal, the Mayor was authorised to issue notices from time to time regulating tho supply of gas in the borough.
Mr. E. P. Bunny asked for tho withdrawal of a caveat from a property onMain Stroet which had been lodged in respect' of a drainage loan, and also for the council's consent to a transfer of the property. Tho application was granted. The Deputy Public Trustee wrote with reference to liis request that a drain or water-course in the Martin Estate be piped, and threatening action if the council did not mako arrangements for deviating the flow of water into the creek or piping the drain. It was decided to reply stating that the council could not accept responsibility in the matter. Tho secretary of tho Hutt Bowling and Tennis Clu'b wrote stating that the committee of tho club had authorised expenditure up to .£2O towards payment of half cost: of a bridge over the creek nt tho western entrance to the club's properly, l'l was decided to ask tlio club lo meet the council halfway in the event of any additional expense being incurred. The report of the engineer stated that the usual amount, of repair work had been carried out during tho past fortnight. Many of the footpaths in Alicetown were in bad condition, and had been given n coat of sand. Ono application for a building permit had been receivad, but owing to peculiar conditions prevailing the engineer recommended that thß permit be not granted.
