Lloyd's annual 6iiramary of mercantile shipping throughout the world in 1918 shows that tho total mercantile output of the Allied and neural countries for that year was 5,447.444 tons. This liguro has liover previously been approached. It is more than 52 per cent, higher thnn tho output of 1913. tho record year prior to tho war, which included Germany and Austria-Hungary, these two countries being excluded from tho present compilation. Throe hundred aad one vessels, of 1,348,120 tons, -wero launched in tho United Kingdom. This is 584,033 tons below tho reoord of 1913, but in 185.224 tons mor» than in 1917 and 739,885 tons more than in 1916. Outside the United Kingdom there worn launched 1565 merchant vessels of 4,099,324 tons. These figures show nn increase of 131 per cent, as compared ivitli '.917, and are 2,698,£65 tons higher than in 1913. Tho United States, Ja,pah and Canada were responsible for 92 per cent, of tho total output abroad.

The Nelson Ilarfcnur Board lias decidcd to convert the soliounor Southern Isle into a dredge. It will lie remembered that the Southern Isle enpsized some time ago and was towed in to Nelson. The Legislative Council at .Suva has passed £46,000 fpr the erection of a new wharf at Lcvuka. 'I'ho Kamo was to go into dock at Lyttelton for survey and overhaul on Friday last, and is expected to be ready for sea. again to-morrow. Tho Monowai, which is at present at Port Chalmers, is undergoing extensive overhaul, including considerable repairs to her boilers. Four of her furnaeeß and other fittings have boen renewed, and by the time she is ready for sea again she will be in firrUjlap.s order. 'i'he Minister of .Marine has granted permission for the schooner fiisborne to be transferred to the Oie Xavale De IVOceanic Company, of Papeete. Tlio vessel has been purchased by that company for the interIsland trade, and is now being overhauled at Auckland preparatory to sailing for Papeete. The Gisborne's name will Jinw appear on tile French register of shipping, and will be deleted from tho New Zealand register.
