THE RAILWAY CUT
HARDSHIPS OP SMALL TOWNSHIP DWELLERS. Sir,—Will you kindly find room for these few lines to complain about the inconsistency of the Railway Department in thoir curtailment of the service, in not°allowiug persons to travel who have a valid reason? This flag station, also Manakau ami Ohau, is l poorly served with shops, and ono cannot get all that is required for households. Tho guards will not allow anyone to travel fivo or 10 miles to the nearest towns, whioh are Otaki and Levin. They toll you to shop in your own place. Plimmerton and Porirua ore a good deal further from Wellington than these places are from their towas. They call the one lot suburban (whatever that means), and as both these townships have far better shops than these West Coast flag stations, yet the one lot are allowed to travel without question and tho others, who would be in tho trains a far shorter time, we not allowed to. If tlio railway people who are responsible for this absurdity will please explain, I shall he thankful.—l am, etc., SUBURBAN.
Te Horo, August 6. [The answer of tho Railway Department to this complaint is that In tho suburban area the restrictions on travel oi'o not imposed because tho suburban area is a residential area for people working in the oity, and most of the travelling is by people going to their work and back to their home 3 in the evening. People may travel on any part of any line if they oomply with the conditions, and satisfy the Department that it is necessary for them to travel.]
