HOCKEY

SATURDAY'S PLAY. The men's hockey at Karori Park on Saturday was not a very high-class exhibition' of tile stick game. The chief event was between Ramblers and Central, but the play in this game was of such a mediocre nature that the spectators lost all interest in the game, and drifted over to No. 2 ground to watch the contest between Wellington and Karori B. Right from '.he bully-off tlie issue was never in doubt. At no period of the game were Central really dangerous and Ramblers settled down to obtain a win with the minimum amount of exertion on their part. Central, on the other hand, worked- hard at times, but lack Npf combination, together with tho hard hitting of their opponents' backs, always brought their efforts to nought, and towards tho end even the players themselves lost interest in the game, and became, at times, engrossed in what was taking place -in the other games near them. The final scoro wa6: Ramblers, 3; Central, nil.

WELLINGTON v: KARORI B. The result of (his game. came as a surprise to many; a pleasant' surprise indeed, for in some quarters Wellington iK*re fully expected to have an easy win. The Wellington players seemed to take the field with Hie conviction that such would lie the case, but .before the game had been long in progress (hey were declined to be sadly disillusioned, for what Karori lacked in science they made up in dash, and they kept their older and more experienced opponents on (he move throughout. The display put up by Wellington whs pitjfullv poor for n team that Is running close for championship honours. Schlaadt, in the backs, did not display any of the form that caused him to be picked to represent Wellington against Manawatu in the recont Shield match. Champness and Surgenor we towers of strength for their side, and Wellington should thank them for being tlifc chief factors in obtaining the win. For Karori B Waieham was ensilj the best of the forwards. I(ilminster is a sound back, and more should be heard of this player, while Roberts in goai brought off some really brilliant saves for his side. Karori are to, be considered lucky in having such a sound playsi between the sticks. The score ended 3 —2 in favour of Wellington. Mr. Edwards had charge of the Ram-blers-Central, and Mr. "Needham the Karori B-Wellington game. . Junior. Karori (4) v. Wesley A (4); University A (5), University B (2). LADIES' The best game of ladies' hockey played on tho park this year was witnessed on Saturday, when Ramblers A mot and defeated Girls' College A by the narrow margin of one goal. The scores were: Ramblers, 3; Girls' College, S. The game was fast and clean throughout, and the excitement ran high. The younger girls from the College fought valiantly against their more experienced opponents, and though beaten were by no means disgraced. .Ramblers combined excellently, and this may be said to have won the game for them, for although the College team were not lacking in combination, thoy did' not always take advantage of the openings given to them. Tho result of this game wins Ramblers the 1819 championship. Mr. Manning was referee. University A (8) drew with Y.W.C.A. (3). University B (5) defeated Base Records (1). Raroa won from Audit by default.
