OTAGO V. WELLINGTON. The above telegraphic match was concluded 011 Saturday evening, when very satisfactory progress was made'. This was in a large measure due to the good work of the various officials mentioned in last week's report. The local team resumed the match with a two-point advantage, having scored wins at boards 2 and 14 on the previous Saturday. There was 110 further play at board 1 owing .to the regretted indisposition of E. A. Cleland, the Otago captain, who is retiring from strenuous match play after being a tower of strength to the Otago G.C. for more than thirty years. A draw was agreed to at this board. S. Gyles, who had won n queen for a knight on Ihe previous Saturday, registered Wellington's third win shortly after 7 p.m. The fourth win came an hour later at board i, where the local player had a three-pawn advantage, and had two bishops co-operating strongly against two knights. Tlis next finish was at board 11, where Horace Ward had lost a knight end pawn. He resourcefully gave up a pawn and scored an iiistructivn draw by perpetual check, his opponent's king being unable to escape from a rota of aupen checks. At 9 p.m. Mr. Gndt.s----chal-k, who was playing strongly at Iward 7, registered Wellington's fifth win, his opponent resigning a hopeless game at move 85. Shortly afterwards the Otago player at board 12 lost his queen through n clerical' error. C. W. Tanner, not wishing to profit by the oversight, generously oiforod a draw, which was accepted. A few minutes later E. S. Taylor, the local lion, secretary, who whs playing at board 10, made a similar slip, nnd lost a rook. Ilis opjjonent did not follow Air. Tanner's example; on the contrary, he claimed his "pound of flesh," and Mr. Taylor resigned without further play. Shortly , after 10 p.m., L. Sim agreed to a draw proposed by his opponent at board S. Mr. Sim was a pawn up, but it would liavo been difficult to get a win from adjudication. At 11 p.m. G. 1\ Anderson, who luuitTed a rook and pawn ending at board G with fine judgment, scored Wellington's sixth win. Mr. Coombs resigned at move 54, when it was.impossiblo to stop tho march of two connected passed pawns. A few minute.; later A. Clark, who gained two rodks and a bishop at board 15, registered tho home team's seventh win. The games at boards 3, 5, and 13 aro incomplete, and will have to be ssnt on for adjudication if no agreement can be como to about them. These outstanding games car.not. of course, alter the result of the match, the present position being that Wellington lias won seven games and Otago one. while four have been drawn and onlr three are outstanding.
