Ho was taken ill on Saturday morning, and developments ensued rapidly, resiling in death at 7.30 p.m. Deceased, who was GO years of age, held tho positions of president of tho Hamilton Club <md Hamilton Racing Club, and was a former president of tho boating club. He took an active interest in all branches of sport, and was looked upon as one of the leading and most esteemed men in the district both from a business and a social standpoint. Born in Devonshire, Mr, Dawo was trained at St. Mark's College for tho teaching profession, and after graduating at Cambridge was appointed to a vacancy nt Christ's College, where ho remained for seven years. Ho then accepted the headmnstership of the Lyttelton Borough School, and after teaching at country schools retired about ten years ago, to reside in Christchurch. lie married a daughter of the Rev. Archibald Cook, lnte of Inverness, and his widow and two daughters survive. His only son died during the epidemic. A presentation of a gold albert wos made to Mr. A. G. Wntkius, of. Christchurch, who has retired from the locomotive iforanch of the Railway Deportment, after long servico, Mr. G. C. Smith, in making (ho presentation, referred eulogistieaily to tho recipients qualities and his valuable work for the Department. Constable J. Qtiinn, of the Mount Cook police, has received notice of his transfer to Grevniouth. He will probably leavo for his new station to-day. Tho burial service at tho funeral of tho late Colonel Newall was conducted by Chaplain-Captains W. Sliirer, S. Robertsoil Orr, and Rev. J. Gibson Smith.
