TROUBLE IN A RESTAURANT.

Tho proceedings in the Magistrate's Court yesterday were presided over by Mr. E.'Pago, S.M. > About a quarter to 7 p.m. on Thursday Alfred Kirk became very obstreperous in tho Cnfo do Paris restaurant. During the course of his meal he became moro than interestingly talkative, but resolutely refused to "hold his tongue,' when rouosted to do so. As his behaviour was very annoying to other people in the restaur.uit, tho proprietor, Anthony Jones, iiske him to be quiet, whereupon lie made use of a uncomplimentary remark and struck Jones a blow in tho oye, and then took his departure; Constablo M'Kinlnv was sent for, and within a few minutes Kirk ,was overtaken. -Vcting-Sub-Inspcctor Emerson said that accused was not altogether sober, but was not altogether drunk. He had been convicted of assault in 1912 and again in l'Jl'i Kirk declared that he was somewhat under tho influence of liquor at the time, and was very sorry .for what had Happened. . A fine of £i, with 18s. costs, in defnult seven (lavs' imprisonment, was imposed. A sailor named James Waftson admitted having deserted from tho steamer Suffolk on August 4. There was another charge against defendant of having disobeyed tho lawful commands of tho mas-, tor but an the Suffolk has sailed from Wellington this was not proceeded with. On tho charge of dosorlion, i Wajtlson was sentenced to a month's imprisonment, but an order was made that ho bo placed on board a vessel sailing from New Zealand on August 20. For insobriety, George Henry Hughes and John O'Neill wore each lined 10s., in default forty-eight hours' detention, three first offenders were fined Us., in dofault twenty-four hours' imprisonment, and anolhcr was ordered to forfeit his hail. 10s. Richard Richmond was ordered lo pay ,C 1 lis. (id., costs, as a consequence of his having been arrested at Miisterlon" on a charge of helpless drunkenness. Thomas Troy was fined ,C 2, in default, seven days' imprisonment, for the broach of hit 'prohibition order, and was convicted and discharged for insobriety. On a charge of quitting n moving train at the Upper Hull, on July 12 E. J. Wilkie was fined £1, with Os. cosls.
