MEETING OF'COUNCIL. The Makara County Council met ycster. day.' Mr. S. Bryant (chairman)- presided. J.t was decided to erect another street lamp at' Porifua .East, and a- lamp at tho end of Station Road, I'aiva Flat. The council considered a proposal inada by'Mr.-Mayer, of Ngahauranga, who wished to sell,.a section of. land on the Ngahaurangu Gorge' Road for -the purposes of ffl quarry. : As there,..vero no funds available for the suggested puichase, the matter lapsed. "■''■'■:;: The county cleric was'instructed to warn an owner, of wafaderiiig stock that! prosecution would follow tho next offence, ■ I'ho question of maintenance of the Ngahauranga "Gorge Road was''again bofore the couiicil. Councillors thought that, much;of. the increase in maintenanca charges was-due to-the heavy traffic of the Wellington City' Councils metal wagons and tho traflio from tho city abattoirs.. It was resolved to'approach tho Wellington City Council with a request for an 'increased contribution. Councillors decided that, tho City Council • should be •asked to use broader tyres on tho wagon trailers; otherwise tho county, by-law suspending such traffic ou the road .; for fivo-months of-the year--would be en-foi-ced. (Tho bv-law referred to is aTfol' lows: "Heavy- traffic of all kinds savefor tho carriage, of. agricultural produce or manure shall.cease during tho whole of tho months of May; June, July, August, and September.'') '
On Sundav afternoon Mr. Janw L, Hav, general secretary of tho Wellington, Young Men's Christian Association, will speak on "The Challenge of the Future,' with special referonce. to the part that can bo played by every young man who is willing to accept, responsibility, and lace the problems that confront us. All young men are invited to come along to 'the meeting. Tho gatherings "are of a« informal character, with hearty..singing and plentv of good fellowship. Iha strangers' tea, which follows at 5 oclock, is presided.over by the ladies, .btrangere (o the city can l>o assured of a very hearty reception. Tho death lias, taken piaoo at -WMsor.' in his 9llth year, of Mr. Henry Wobber, who for nuiiis years kept the tuck enop near Barnes Pool Bridge, at Eton. Ho was born at Eton and succeeded hi* father, Samuel Webber, in the business. Webber's wa* * well-known - place of- ra» sort for Etonians in the last .century. Mr. Webber retired about 30 years ago. He was Mayor of Windsor in 1894, tho voar of Hie great Thames flood,-anoV-wul made chairman of tho Thames Kood Prevention Committee. He wa6 mado ft magistrate.for tho borough in.1900, and for" some years was a member of - tho Board of Guardians. -■■ -
