THE WELSH CHURCH

SPIRITED DEBATE IN THE COMMONS. London, August 7. The Bill granting .151,000,000 to l,lio Welsh local authorities for commutation of tithes, under the 1014 Church Disendowmenl- Act was read a second time in the House of Commons by 182 votes to 37. The tithe was worth .677 in 19W, and has risen, owing to the influence of war,'to Jilffil, and will'probably reach £K\\ next year, when the Act operates. There was spirited opposition to the Bill. Lord Hugh Cecil accused Mr. Biiiwr Law and the Unionist Ministers of betraying the church. Lord Robert Cooil and other Unionists denounced the disendownient as robbery. He had 'quitted the Government because the Premier's pledge on the matter was unsatisfactory. Compromise on such a subject was cowardice. Mr. Bonar Law said the Bill steered a middle course, as befitted a Coalition Government representing a mass of nations.—A us.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
